Marlets hanging

BLIXA is dead his coffin a shiny black
Six Martlets they hang-out at his back,
two to sing, two to pray, two to carry his soul away…*1

Gavin Friday, King of Trash

*1 The birds are Martlets, which is a swallow like bird but sans feet – it is used as an emblem in Sussex to represent the 6 “Rapes” (sub-divisions) of the county centered around the Norman Castles. Like a swallow the bird does everything on the wing and because it has no feet it never lands, this is said to symbolize the constant quest for knowledge, learning, and adventure. These birds fascinate me a little bit. I have confused the use of the imagery as I use the birds to play with the song ‘King of Trash’, written by Fionán Martin Hanvey, which has the verse

“The King is dead his coffin a shiny black
six Angels they hang-out at his back,
two to sing, two to pray, two to carry his soul away…”

A song about Marc Bolan I believe, listen to it, it is good – in a sense I am mocking my own vanity, but show that I am connected with the county and the landscape with that restless spirit which is symbolized by the heraldic bird. Anyway, it’s just a nice picture, yeah? No need to get all hyper involved in it. Take from it what you will.
